Overview

The Canadian Tulip Festival is North America’s largest tulip festival and is a top attraction for visitors each year to Canada’s National Capital.

The Festival has a royal history, originating in the gift of tulips from the Dutch Royal Family for Canada’s role in spearheading the liberation of the Netherlands in WWII, and for providing a safe haven in Ottawa for members of the Dutch Royal Family during the war. Since then, the tulip has become Ottawa’s official flower and, each spring, the National Capital Region blooms with magnificent tulip beds planted by the National Capital Commission, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors.

The tulip has also become the floral symbol of international friendship. Following the lead of the Netherlands with its gift of friendship to Canada, during the Festival the international community adds to the pageantry and programming with cultural displays and performances reflecting the diversity of the National Capital community.
